Sowing Garlic

The bulblets of the garlic are planted at the end of September – October. They can also be sown later, up until February, with a slight delay in growth (the risk is that not several bulbs form, but only one) and some farmers choose to plant them at the end of August or September. The bulblet is planted 4 – 6 centimetres deep with the tip facing upwards, similarly to garlic cultivation. The shoot, with autumn sowing, can take up to two months to emerge. In this phase the plant uses up its reserves, so it will be stronger if the starting clove is nice and large. Budding is favoured by temperatures between 15° and 20° C, but it already occurs at 5° C. The formation of the bulb stops when 25° C is reached. For planting, the distance between the rows is 60 – 70 cm.
